The STIHL MS 500i Chainsaw is the world’s first high-power chainsaw with an electronically controlled fuel injection system. With 5.0 kW of output and a power-to-weight ratio of 1.24 kg/kW — the best on the market — the MS 500i redefines what a professional chainsaw can achieve when processing large-diameter timber.

The proprietary STIHL Injection system is the defining feature of this machine. The electronic control unit continuously calculates the optimum fuel quantity and ideal ignition timing, injecting directly into the crankcase via the injection valve. Sensors measure air pressure and internal and external temperature, passing data to the control unit in real time. The result is acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 0.25 seconds and consistent, optimised performance regardless of altitude or ambient temperature. Unlike conventional carburettor engines, the MS 500i requires no choke position — electronic injection eliminates this step entirely.

The STIHL 2-MIX engine meets EU Stage V standards and combines injection technology with high fuel efficiency and low emissions. The easily accessible manual fuel pump further simplifies the starting sequence. The manual decompression valve eases starting by releasing part of the compressed mixture before ignition.

The lightweight, compact design allows the MS 500i to perform with agility not only in felling and bucking but also in limbing. The optimised bumper spikes — with teeth arranged in an arc matching the radial contours of tree trunks — provide a firm grip during crosscutting and felling. The optimised sprocket cover, narrower and flatter than previous designs, makes limbing easier and improves chip clearance, with integrated slide rails and a guide edge to steer the tool along the trunk with less effort. The plunge guide simplifies checking the cut direction during plunge-cut operations.

Side-mounted chain tensioning enables fast, secure re-tensioning; captive nuts on the sprocket cover prevent component loss in the field; and fuel and oil tank caps open and close without tools. The STIHL Ematic system with adjustable-delivery oil pump reduces chain oil consumption by up to 50%. The STIHL anti-vibration system significantly reduces vibration transmission to the handles, making extended working sessions considerably less tiring.
